Neue Machtstrukturen und Repräsentation

Es kann und es wird alles passieren. Hinsichtlich dieser Unsicherheit ist Will Fredo sich sicher. Wir haben den Künstler nach seinen Vorstellungen von der Zukunft des Kunstbetriebs befragt. Will sieht Europa den USA hinterherhinken – aber auch hier Fortschritt.

I have no idea what is going to happen in the coming months. Judging from my personal life historically and as of lately anything can and will happen. It’s this uncertainty that also gives me the agency to assert that what happens tomorrow is very much dependent on what I personally do today, rather than what other people do.

However, I can certainly talk about tendencies from what is going on in my digital and physical surroundings. In the USA there’s been at least three major appointments in the past months that signal a substantial shift in power dynamics or at least representation. I’m speaking of Naomi Beckwith as the first Black deputy director and chief curator at the Guggenheim, Antwaun Sargent as the new director and curator at Gagosian, and Kyla McMillan as the new director of David Zwirner, a gallerist who also recently opened an all-Black staff gallery in New York, headed by Ebony L. Haynes. 

In Europe change is slower but we have been noisy and they are listening somehow. After years of protests a Berlin street (and metro station) with a racist name is being renamed to Anton-Wilhelm-Amo-Straße, after the first known Black professor and philosopher in Germany. And in Rotterdam FKA Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art is going through a decolonisation process starting with changing its name into Kunstinstituut Melly. A name change is by no means the end point but a clear demarcation of how far we’ve come and where we’re heading to.

Will Fredo ist bildender Künstler und Autor. Er hat die “Sexual Healers TV” ins Leben gerufen, eine Kunst-Plattform zu Sexarbeit und Körperpolitiken. Und er ist der stellvertretende Chefredakteur des großartigen Online-Magazins “Contemporary And”, das sich mit afrikanischen Perspektiven in der Kunst befasst.
